How did you find your first Geocache?

I’m one of the few still around that read the article in the Clarion-Ledger back in 2003. They ran an article about Geocaching and after reading it became curious about geocaching and bought a GPS and went out and found my first cache shortly there after. But it took a couple of months to go out and get that first GPS.

How did you choose your handle?

I work in Roadway Design and the 57 is the year I was born. There is a funny story about it, as a new state employee I had been there long enough to figure they charge the divisions with everything. I had to get a taxi to take me to one of our other buildings and when ask “who is it for” I thought he meant the division and I said Roadway Design. One of my coworker thought it was funny and started to call me roadway. It is an honor to have a division in MDOT named after you, isn’t it? lol

How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?

As a general rule I pass on puzzle caches. I have solved a few, just not many. I’ll spend an hour or two and if things don’t start to ‘jell’ soon I will hang it up. That is when I evoke a leadership skill learned in Scouts, “knowing and using the resources of the group” and ask someone that has solved the puzzle. Go Bobwhites!!

What town/areas have you most enjoyed caching in?

That is a tough one. I enjoy road trips and I enjoy finding caches. Some that come to mind are a road trip with Eagle700 to El Dorado (where I set a personal one day best of 70 caches). Memphis is a good town to cache in. New Orleans is a GREAT town to be in, let alone the GREATEST cache of all time – View Carre (GCE02C).

How long have you been geocaching, and what was your first find?

I started my GC accout on October 2, 2003 and found my first cache on October 9, 2003. My first cache I found was a Mauler6 hide, Heroes Wall

Who usually goes with you when you go caching?

My wife Lighten, she is generally the one that find the cache first.

Do you use paperless caching?

Yes, I have done paperless with a PDA, but find it easiest and best done with my iphone. I feel sorry for you Cellular South people because you can’t get the iphone. But, you will probably have a signal before me. lol

What kind of geocaching rig do you use?

Lighten (Tammy) and I usually go in our car on the week days and in the Explorer on the week ends. We use the best GPS the world, the Garmin 60CSX

Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?

As with many a cacher, because it takes me to places that I would have never seen before. I also like to take photos and I have taken a few photos of places I’ve seen and been to. But, being a techie, I also take photo of stuff you would find boring. Like guard rail, median barrier, highway stuff. Having worked on highway for over 30 years, I like to see the road construction in different places.

Are you originally from Mississippi?

Yep, all my life and never anywhere else.

States you have geocached?

10 states: MS, AR, LA, AL, TN, MO, TX, IL, NV, AR and 1 in Canada.

What was your first event ever attended?

The “MS Fall Gathering ‘03” (GCH4ZN) that was held in Vicksburg and hosted by southdeltan, a guy that was instrumental in the foundation of MSGA. Looking back at the logs for that event, the only ones active now are Wray, Lighten and myself.

How many caches have you found?

Proud to say 1030. I know it isn’t as many as ADS1, Eagle700, amagrud and others, but I am proud to have that many. I can’t find a 1.5, 1.5 in a tree without a good hint sometimes. lol

Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?

Since I am old school that one is easy, an ammo can. Nothing sounds better that that ‘THUMP” in the woods.

What was the most famous cache that you have found?

There is one cache that I think stands above a lot of other caches. I know this because I have had it on my watch list for over a year. This cache receives people from all over the world and they ALL rave over it. “The Best cache I have ever done,” and, “Biggest cache I’ve ever done”, and “Best view I’ve had”, are just a few of the comments this caches gets. I choose it for my 1K, none other than View Carre (GCE02C). Another one or two that are famous, the Bonita Lakes cache (GC90) & Little Brown Bottle (GC2462)

Do you use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries?

No, but they sound like an excellent idea. That would be one easy step to help the environment.
