Okay I have never even thought about benchmarks yet due to I just got started with geocaches in November. Someone said that the old water tower in downtown Edwards is a benchmark. My question is how do I get started? Where do I log them and since you don't sign a log how do you "Log" so to speak that you found it? Pictures? A Number you have to retrieve? Just need a little guidance on this from those of you who hunt for benchmarks. Thanks Sandy _________________ Edwards, Ms

on the main GC.com page on the left hand side there is a bar for benchmarks right under hide and seek a cache. The page it will lead you to is the benchmark page. On the left it will ask for a zip code or a PID number. I go with the zip and then try to find which benchmark I'm looking for. Its a little harder since the benchmark number on the website and the number on the benchmark aren't exactly the same. We only log benchmarks when we find then while looking for geocaches. They don't count toward your find total, but they are a little bonus. Digging through the BM's in your zip may be a little hard to do, I know it has been tough for me. Logging them from what I can tell is on the honor system (either you found it or you didn't.) You can post photos, but really it doesn't matter too much. _________________ S.M.A.R.T. That is what I do also... I have found about 6... normally I find it if it is close to a cache that I was going to anyway... or if it is right in my own yard... _________________ S.M.A.R.T. Public Relations ..

There is a lot of useful info, just right here in the benchmark forum on the MSGA site. Lacey and Sniperchicken are bigtime benchmark hunters. They have some great printed materials that will help you.
I also started another beginners one on our nelageo site. Here is a link to the very first starter primer there. It may help some.
Thanks so much for all the help. I might have to log a few of these that are really close to the house. Thanks LSUFan,,,that link is a good one. _________________ Edwards, Ms
I went searching for Benchmarks for the first time this past Sunday, and I found five. I took pictures and posted them as my way of 'logging' my visit. _________________ ~ Stephanie ~

Excellent Stephanie. I'm glad to hear you are taking an interest in benchmarking....which I like to do more than geocaching. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We have been adding a lot of info on benchmarking over on the nela site.
Probably the most important thing for anyone just starting out in benchmarking is understanding the difference between scaled and adjusted coordinates. Here is some reading, if you are interested:

That sounds great. Just let me know when you're in the area, and I'll see what's going on. If it's where I can break loose, I'd love to join you. _________________ ~ Stephanie ~
